We spent the rest of the holiday getting around Malta by bus. It's dirt cheap and the services are regular. We went to some lovely beaches, Mellieha Bay and Golden Bay were both lovely and we had some good days out at these places.
Malta is a nice place, once you get over the vast amount of dog poo in the streets. Honestly it's everywhere!!!! It is a very heavily populated island, the 4th largest population per square mile in the world, so a lot of areas are very built up. The people are friendly and the atmosphere relaxed but it just wasn't me. I'd prefer the laid back quiet of a small Greek Island village anyday.
If I had to go back to somewhere so heavily populated for a holiday, I would choose Hong Kong over Malta. I love HK, there's just something about the place. The busiest city in the world sees people quietly doing Tai Chi on the streets first thing in the morning. No litter, dog poo or dust. Modern buildings which are clean and comfy and quiet little outlying islands easily reachable by ferry. Malta lacked a certain something and I can't quite put my finger on what it was......
