I am trying to do the right thing during this dreadful time, and, as I am well and truly in the age group that is most at risk according to the medical experts, I have been self-isolating. Although over here it is not compulsory as yet, us oldies have been urged to stay at home and so that’s what I’m doing. I did have to go for my ‘flu jab on Saturday though - this was the 9th day of being isolated.
Since my husband passed away I have more-or-less almost become used to living alone so self-isolation is no big deal for me. I say ‘almost’ because I’m not sure if you ever do get completely used to it. Have to say though that this is definitely different in that before if I felt like going out then I did, if I felt like joining friends for coffee or having someone over for a meal, then that happened.
When I left the house on Saturday to go to see my doctor I felt quite guilty, and I felt quite relieved to get back home again. I am not a worrier but, like everyone else, I certainly don’t want to catch this virus hence me being sensible and doing what I have been told I should do – there’s a first time for everything!
After my ‘excursion’ I could almost understand why some people suffer from agoraphobia, and are not able to leave the safety of their home. Not that this would happen to me as I like talking too much, and yes I do talk too much, and I like people, well most of them.
I am managing to fill my days really well up to now – can always find something to occupy my mind, and there’s plenty of empty spaces in there to fill. I have never been much for television, well not for a lot of the stuff they put on these days. I have definitely never been one for the so-called reality shows. I think I have only watched one before and that was a cooking competition. All I got from that was that I never saw any of them wash their hands, they taste-tested their cooking in most unhygienic ways (like my children used to when I was baking), and there was only ever half a second left by the time they had put the food on the plates ready to serve.
However, the other day I thought that I would tune in to a reality show – after all how can you condemn without giving a fair hearing (or watching), and I do like to be fair. So I foolishly tuned in to ‘Married At First Sight’. The title should have been enough to give me a clue as to the intelligence in the content.
At first sight I thought it was an advert for plastic surgery – especially boob jobs, the enlargement of same, or maybe the thickening of lips. How those young women kept their ‘perfect’ boobs from completely popping out of what they were wearing (or almost wearing) was a blooming marvel. I guess the male viewers would find it quite titillating (sorry, I couldn’t help myself) to watch. I couldn’t believe the bitchiness and enjoyment of gossip that abounded (and that was just from the men!). Do modern-age blokes really go on like that. Talk about old women – no, I take that back – it’s an insult to us oldies.
The so-called weddings here are not legal by the way, only commitment ceremonies – and anyone who takes part really should be committed!
Then we come to the sex part – the experts (sexperts) were seemingly encouraging the ‘husband and wife’ to consummate their ‘marriage’ - to take it ‘that step further’ after only a couple of days, and then expecting them to talk about it…..imagine telling all and sundry (and the rest of the world who might be watching) ‘yes, we did it’ – and what it was like. I am as broad-minded as they come but honestly, did I really want to know that….one thing I do know for certain is that reality shows will not be on my list of things to watch in future.
Anyway I am now going to have some Face Time with my young granddaughters – they are much more interesting and definitely more intelligent. So I will finish this blog off by saying here’s hoping none of you catch the virus – stay well, and if you are isolated stay sane.
