I have been asked to make a couple of cards for a lady's birthday.
It is this lady's 70th birthday very soon.
I have been asked to add the age to the front of the card.
Now, I am not precious about my age(over seventy) but when I was seventy, himself bought me a card with 70 on the front and was aggrieved when I took exception to it.
In fact it caused something of an argument in our house.
This argument ended up with him ripping the offending card into bits.
He thought I might be upset by these actions, but I just told him that it was a good job he had done it as he had saved me the job.
Himself said he would never buy me another birthday card....I told him that that would be no great loss as his choice of cards left a lot to be desired.
It all got quite ugly...and all over a number on a card.
My brother in Sydney(aargh, spit) also sent a card with a number on it.
That was consigned to the bin too.
What makes anyone think that we need a reminder that we are at our biblical 'sell by' date?
I feel remarkably fortunate to still be above the grass....and in a fit and healthy state.
Had I known I would live this long I would have taken more care of myself.
My feelings about ages on cards are:- ages are fine on cards for children....they like everyone to know that they are growing up.
They are fine too for an 18 or 21 year old, but after that....no!
I am going to ask the person if she has thought of how the lady might feel about having her age on the card....and will tell her of my experience.
If she still wants the number on the card....then I will put it on....reluctantly.
After all, whatever she gives me for the card will go into the fund to get Spindleshanks on his way to Borneo on his volunteering expedition...and that is the object of the exercise.
