One sentence...

That's all I'm looking for, just one sentence.......

I have loads of research for my dissertation. I have newspaper cuttings from the 80's which were incredibly difficult to get. I have watched the video which I borrowed from J. I have all the latest statistics and past statistics. I have all of the latest treatment guidelines. The one thing that is missing is the one magic sentence with which to begin my introduction. One eyecatching gripping sentence which says "this is worth reading."

I don't need a sensationalist headline or dramatic quote from some newspaper or scientific boffin, as the subject speaks for itself. There has been enough damage done with sensationalism. I need a sensitive sentence which says "this affects us all, feel free to read on....."

I always have this problem when beginning a project. I can never think of my first sentence. It normally comes to me when I'm nowhere near a piece of paper and a pen, eg. in bed or on the loo. I have some of my best inspirations on the loo. Psychologists would probably have a field day with that one....:D

Anyhow, wish me luck and hope that I get a flash of inspiration soon, I'm desperate to make a start.

Good luck with that one Lettie.......you are right, you DO need either a contentious statement or something sensational to grab your reader in the first few sentences.
Why not go for something sensational and then dispel the myths with your text. Another thing is.......while you are searching for it, it will never land......just forget it for a day or two and do some other part of your dissertation that is easier, or perhaps more statistically based.

Half of me envies you......think of the feeling you will have when you have got it finished. The other half of me (the lazy half) thinks thank goodness that isn't me. To be honest I don't think I could do it.

it's a pen your short of because if it comes to you on the loo, bog roll a plenty ;) Hope you think of something soon

Whats the topic/question that you are answering? I'm good with sentences ;)

Blazey, if you look at the date of this blog you'll realise that the sentence has been written, submitted and marked.
Lettie has her degree now.
