I love Christmas day but I'm always really pleased when it's over with.
We had a little bit of a lie in because we'd all been out on Christmas eve so the kids didn't get up until about 8ish - a result I think! Zack was first up and I just loved the look on his face when he went into the living room, his eyes were so wide open it was beautiful. We let him start opening his presents and then Maddie sort of snuck into the room that we almost missed that wide eyed wonder look on her face! Everything that Zack opened he said "that's just what I wanted" he's so appreciative, Maddie on the other hand kept saying "that wasn't on my list, why did he bring that?". Fortunately, Father Christmas had made some wise choices and even though the presents weren't on her list she liked them.
The turkey went in at about 9ish, ready for a mid afternoon meal. Then time to peel carrots and prepare a few other things before showering.
Guests arrived at 12.30 (my Mum and Dad, Chris's Mum, brother and grandad) and it was time for a mega present opening frenzy with another mountain of presents arriving for the kids. They have got so much stuff it's like a toy shop in our living room at the moment.
Only slightly sad moment was when we sat down for lunch. I didn't want a big fuss to be made about the fact that my Nanna wasn't there but equally it was right to toast her. So I very quickly asked for silence and made a quick toast for absent friends. I had a bit of a tear in my eye but brushed it away, Christmas Day is not the day to get sad.
We ate our own body weight in food but as usual I forgot something. I was really cross with myself because I usually make stuffing balls but for some year it just slipped my mind. Oh, well, perhaps next year I'll get it right.
Then we settled in for a lazy afternoon playing with the kids toys and watching Shrek and Dr Who. The men folk fell asleep for a while (how traditional are we - women doing the washing up and men sleeping in the armchairs!)?
So, it's all over for another year - phew!
