Paint and Varnish.

Well the joiner worked like......well, like a navvy. The good news is that the doors are on. However, they still need to be stained.......I'm not sure about varnish...and I'm going to decide on that once the staining is done.

I'm not hopeful about getting it done soon....my hubby is very much a procrastinator....he is always going to do it tomorrow.
And when he does settle down to do this work I fear for my carpet and other furnishings......he can put sheets down and still flick paint or varnish somewhere it should never be. That makes him sound inept doesn't it.....?
he isn't really, he is just a bit slapdash....and if something goes wrong his stock phrase is 'well, it's no big deal'.......well it may not be a big deal to him but to me it is.
A few years ago we bought a new bed. We had just decorated the bedroom and had a lovely burgundy carpet put down. He decided that he would make some drawers to go under the bed....and a very fine job he made of them too.......but (there's always a 'but' in these kind of stories)
he hadn't varnished them.....he decided he would do that once they were in position under the bed. I told him to make sure that he put something down to prevent any spills on the new carpet. Do you think he listened to that advice? Well, no of course he didn't. The next news he was shouting 'Margaret.....Quick, get me a cloth'.....I rushed upstairs with a cloth and he looked a bit sheepish and told me he had knocked over the tin of varnish. I thought it was a wind up....it wasn't. Almost the whole tin was on my lovely new carpet.
I was as mad as a wet hen in a thunderstorm. I threw the cloth at him and flew downstairs close to tears. He must have spent a good hour cleaning up the mess. Fortunately it was water based and he managed to wash it out....but it took an awful lot of elbow grease.

Common sense and men...well, they just don't go well together do they.....or am I being cruel and unkind?

Sounds about right.....

If you use Sikkens woodstain (available from Red Rose on Warner St) it is a decorator's woodstain and not the cheapest, but you will not need to varnish it afterwards.
