I started my schooling on my fourth birthday, January the seventh, nineteen sixty-nine. I got a satchel which l was most disappointed in. I also remember that it was stormy, and my little Chrisopher Robin hat blew off into Mrs Snape's garden as we struggled down Stanhill Lane in a gale.

I'm sure l'll write about school again, but today l've been thinking back to that idyllic time before the next seventeen years of education was about to start.

I was the first generation of children born in my family, also the first child born to my parents contemporaries. I'm not saying l was spoilt because of this, but l did do very well out of this fact. I'm sure people later regretted giving me so much because l was the first born, perhaps not. As well as some wondrful toys and books, l was given some jewellry. Still waiting for the right girl to give it to, hee hee.

I certainly have memories of our old house we left when l was two. l drew a plan of the kitchen Mum identifid as correct. We then moved up Stanhill, and l had two wonderful years playing, and having a happy childhood.

Every Tuesday l went with my Great Aunt to the 'Bright Hour' at Stanhill Methodist Church. I was the only child in attendance, and afterwards l had tea with my Great Aunt and Great Uncle, until Dad picked me up at seven o clock.

They lived on a farm in Stanhill Village, and it is one of my favoutite places, I can still conjour it up when l need to go to a happy place. There was a beautiful garden which had a summer house, a swing and a real well. It even had a robin that lived in a teapot in the Hawthorn hedge. It was magical.

Inside was a treasure trove of interesting things for a little person to marvel at. The front parlour had a piano and we used to sing in there, but the living room was my favourite place. A big coal fire was always in the grate even in summer as otherwise there was no hot water.

I had my own cupboard in the sideboard. This mainly contained things l had aquired from their only child. He had been a Doctor, but had sadly been killed in a car crash in Aden in 1961. Thus l grew up with toys and books originally intended to have been played with or read in the thirties. Who on earth was Teddy Tails? He didn't take off as Micky Mouse did! My favourite books were the three Winnie the Pooh books, which l could read by this time but much prefered having them read to me curled on someones lap.

Oh l so want to carry on, but my hand is in spasm, bugger!
