A couple of years ago when my broadband contract was up for renewal, I was contacted by BT and offered 'superfast' broadband.
The chap who was telling me about it said that it would make downloading films, streaming programs faster and easier.
I told him to stop.
I do not indulge in downloading anything....not films, not music....and I haven't a clue about 'streaming'.
I asked him to just renew the package I had because I was happy with it and did not want to pay the extra money for this superfast thing because I would not get value for money.
(Did I tell you that as well as being a gobby cow, I am a frugal Yorkshire/Scottish Jew).
So it was renewed and that was that.
At the end of March I received a notification that all customers were being moved to Fibre Broadband.
That the copper wire Broadband would be shut down, cease to exist because the fibre Broadband was more reliable....and joy of joys....if I renewed I could have this with a new hub for NO EXTRA cost.....I liked that bit.
I was told that the new hubs were being sent out in a couple of weeks.....and that the shut off of the copper wire Broadband would happen on the 17th of July.
It got into June....no hub, but I didn't fret too much....there was still time.
It got into July and still no new hub.
I got a letter telling me that I really needed to shift my haunches and set up my new hub.
New hub???
What new hub....still not arrived.
I got on the blower and spoke to a lovely young man called Reece.
He said a hub had been sent out in the middle of June.....and returned as we were not in!
I told him that this was rubbish as we were codgers and as such were not venturing out much....and were certainly back home by the time the post came everyday.
He could not understand why they had not tried to re-deliver it.
He said he would get one out to me.
True to his word....he did.
It arrived on the 15th.
I plugged it in and right enough it lit up....but red lights.....I looked at the destructions and they told me it would start off red...progress to orange...then blue.
I then would need to input the new password.
I waited and waited....still red.
I unplugged it and plugged it back in....that is my stock solution for when things do not work.
Still nothing.
I went downstairs thinking that watching it was putting it off.
Two hours elapsed and still nothing.....so I plugged my old hub back in.
I looked at the hub....maybe it had sustained some damage in transit.
Yet it was really well packed and I could see no dings or evidence that it was injured.
I turned the hub upside down and on the bottom was a tiny sticker...less than the size of a thumbnail on it was written 'faulty'.
Grrrrr.
I had spent all day messing about, trying all kinds of things to get it sorted....a lot of under my breath muttering and a lot of 'chuffings '....only to find that it was not MY ineptitude at all.
I did not feel in the best frame of mind to do telephone battle with call centre staff(maybe in the Asian sub continent)...I feared I would get a bit terse, rude even....and it was late in the day.
So I left it until the following morning and warned my other half that we just might be without Internet if the hub did not come by midnight on the 17th.
To be continued....
