There I was yesterday afternoon, just out of bed. I had worked the night before and by eck...it was a busy one. I went to bed for a few hours to get some much needed shut eye. I crawled out of bed feeling achy and creaky and made a brew. I was just sipping my coffee when the phone rang. I can't stand it when I've just got up and am one of those unfortunate souls who need to come round a bit before actually having to speak to anyone. As it was late afternoon, I reckoned that the constantly ringing phone would be somebody trying to sell me something so.......I picked it up to give the unlucky caller a flea in his ear (I'm really not a people person when tired)
The caller was my mum who said that she had some news. My mum never calls me during the day unless it is really important. I immediately felt the cold wave of dread washing over me, and wondered who could have died now???? I mean, there's not many of us left to go at....
The news was that my Grandma and Aunty had travelled up from Leicester for a surprise visit. That's just typical of Aunty R!!!!!! She had woken up that morning and thought 'I'll go to Accy today', drove round to my Gran's and disturbed her early morning shower, bundled her in the car and here they were.
"Oh bo**ocks!!!!" I exclaimed, "just give me a few minutes to have a shower and bring them down here."
I ran up to the bathroom, had a shower and got dressed. As I was running back down the stairs there was a loud volley of banging on the front door, my mum has a knock that would wake the dead. I opened the door and there was my Gran, I haven't seen her for about a year although, we do speak on the phone and she has now learned to e mail. My Aunty was there too, I was really pleased to see them. After a few hugs we had a chat. Gran showed me her new mobile phone, it is much more slick and technologically advanced than mine..
They gave me a present for my impending birthday, I'll be 10 at the end of the month (I'll leave you to do the sums), but needles to say, I'm not happy about it
My Gran says that it is just a number and she is always right. It was only a flying visit, Gran was eager to get to Grego's and see little Robert, she's never seen him yet and doesn't want him to be at school before she gets to see him. She also wanted to visit her sister in Clitheroe who has recently had a stroke.
As they were leaving my Gran said "think on... it's only a number." "You're as young as you feel." She should know, she's 80 this year (and would kill me if she read this, believe me, she can still pack a punch
)
I immediately phoned Grego, who had just finished work, and gave her the 5 minute warning... I have to say that despite her age, my Gran looks marvellous. Maybe there is something in this 'only a number' thing after all.
