The BIG one!

Yesterday it was our 49th wedding anniversary.
It dawned as a grey and uninspiring day.....but although the day was shrouded in mist, it was dry.
Unlike the day of our wedding which was like the first day of the flood....the one which Noah built the Ark for.

I had made a card for himself.....and surprise surprise he had bought one for me.
I had also bought him a pretty smart lightweight autumn coat......showerproof.
I had bought this because a few weeks ago when out and about on our Saturday jaunt he had tried one of these coats on in M&S at Bolton.
He said he liked it but would buy one from the Accrington shop.

The fact that he had not done so gave me the ideal opportunity to buy him something which I knew he wanted....knew he liked, and given the chance would have bought for himself.

I wrapped his gift beautifully in shiny blue wrapping paper and put it on the sofa for him to see when he came down from his shower.
He came downstairs, saw the parcel and the card.
He opened the card and got a bit glassy eyed at the sentiment that I had written.
Then he opened the parcel. He told me that I shouldn't have bought it.
That I should have spent the money on myself.....but he liked it and would wear it when we go on our jaunts.

He hadn't bought me anything. I would have fallen over in surprise if he had done so.

So yesterday,we went out to Southport.
We had morning coffee. A look around the shops.
He asked me if there was anything that took my fancy.....(there wasn't) we had lunch and I had a large glass of wine, by way of celebration.
Then we came home.....so that was our day.
It was pleasant, but not much by way of celebration.

In just a years time we will be at our 50th.....the big one.
How, I wonder, will we celebrate that one??
In the past I was saving up so the day could be celebrated in some kind of spectacular style.
After all....isn't 50 years some kind of record?
Maybe we would have gone off somewhere hot, or exotic.....but the house needing all that work at the end of last year ate almost all the funds that I had put aside for the 'hot and exotic'.
I have also decided that I am not much into hot and exotic anymore......and that having spent the money on the house was the best and most sensible thing to do - and will last longer than even the most vivid memories of hot and exotic have paled.
It's a no brainer......a trip somewhere that mosquitoes wear clogs and like old vintage blood...or a comfortable home in which we can settle down and be warm, snug and enjoy our own company.

I have considered that perhaps what would suit us more would be something much more restrained.
A trip to Edinburgh, a short break in Bath, a stay in a cottage in the Cotswolds.
All of these seem much more appealing than a stay in the Maldives......and he might even get the chance to wear his smart new coat!

Lovely! Happy 49th anniversary Margaret. I share your thoughts in that these days, those hot and exotic places are much over-rated. Give me something comfortable, and with enough interest that we can celebrate being together with our hubbies.

Thank you Carolyn.
I thought it was just me. Once upon a time I would have looked forward to travels to hot sunny places......but we change don't we?
I would happily settle for somewhere that had lots of interesting places to visit......pleasant views, a comfortable bed and simple food.
I might just get that....but only if I search it out and book it myself :)

Well done the pair of you, that's some good long time together that. As to Hot & exotic, overrated if you ask me; I did it & people wanted to shoot me  :), give me comfortable & homely any time.

Thanks son.
For our silver we went to Hong Kong....does that qualify as hot and exotic?
All I know was that while we were there we were confined to base because there was a typhoon.
It was interesting to watch from the 34th floor.
Comfortable and homely does it for me too.....which is why there is no money for hot and exotic:)

Congratulations to you both. Doesn't matter where you spend an anniversary as long as you spend it together. Here's to many more for you.
