The Valuation

Today was the first valuation on Ma's house.
I was dreading this. I have so many memories tied up in that place...and it is going to be hard to hand it over to be sold.

I arrived early.
The valuer was coming at midday. I was there by 10am.
That was OK. I had things I could do.
I wanted to move the TV stand in the living room, clean behind it...it was very dusty and grubby(God only knows when the skirting board was washed down).
I could not leave it like that so I got a large bowl of very hot sudsy water and set about wiping down all the skirting boards in the living room...then I moved on to the lobby.
I disturbed one of the biggest spiders I have seen in a long while....he(or she) scattered off towards the front room.

I gave the carpet a going over with the vacuum....then I decided I would go upstairs and freshen up the landing carpet and the bathroom carpet too.
There were some suspicious looking brown stains in the bathroom....I realised when I got down on my hands and knees that these were rust stains from under Ma's Bathroom scales.
I did manage to lighten them but failed t remove them completely.

I was wiping down the window bottoms when I heard a knock on the door.
I skipped downstairs and went to the door.
There was a very personable young man there, complete with briefcase and a folder.
He came in and I set about showing him around the place.
He took time to note the characteristics of the house.
He was surprised to find that the house had a cellar complete with a Spring water well...that has never run dry.
He said that he had never ever seen a house with its own well.

The valuation took something in the order of an hour.
I was left feeling that if the house has to be sold then would feel more comfortable letting this young man market the property...he seemed to like the old house..he said it has 'spirit'...a personality.

Well, of course it has....and it pleased me that he recognised it.

My cynical son in law said he had played me like a fiddle...and that it was just business.
I thought it was me who was the cynic in this game.

Anyway, I have to do it all again on Monday...at least I have had a practice.

I dont think the guy was playing you? any fool can walk in a house anywhere and sense right away. thats my view anyway.

I don't think so either Cashy.
He seemed a very genuine young man.
I told him that the house dates from 1868...he said he liked the character of old houses....that they had a different 'feel' to them.
Anyway, we now have to wait and see what Monday brings.

When we were buying our house 40 years ago it was a new build...We had about 5 houses to choose from, we went into everyone and as soon as I walked into the house we bought, We both new it was the house for us...Still here

I am hoping that the personality of the house will sell it, that it hugs the buyer....and I hope who ever buys it is as happy in it as Ma was....even though she sometimes got exasperated with it...because it had got ungainly for her to manage.

It is good that you have got a home that hugs you.

What i meant was as soon as yeh walk through the door of an house, if yeh get that feeling its sold.;)
