To infinity and beyond.

I am exaggerating again....it was only Halifax.
It just felt like infinity.....it was a fair old bus ride...a real square bum of a ride.

This morning the sun was shining. The birds were singing. But himself has had a painful hip....old age(I don't quite get that. His other hip is just as old but that one is alright) wear and tear.
Anyway he said he didn't fancy going very far and headed off for the bus to......Blackburn....Aaarrrrgggh.
I didn't quite know where I wanted to go.....except I knew I didn't want to be trailing round the shops.

I decided that I would go to either Hoghton Tower.....or Halifax, or even Hebden Bridge.
So now I had a few 'possibles' I needed to make a concrete decision. I tossed a coin......heads it would be Hoghton Tower.....tails it would be Halifax....or possibly Hebden Bridge.

Tails it was....so I went out for the Burnley bus.....first having checked that I would not have a long wait for the connection at Burnley.
No....the computer told me that the bus for Halifax would be in within five minutes of getting to the bus station.

The best laid plans are sometimes flawed.
I waited and waited for the Burnley bus.....it was fifteen minutes late. This did not bode well for getting the bus to Halifax.
The driver went like he was being pursued by the hounds of hell....and to be fair he did make up a bit of time.
We arrived at Burnley bus station to see the Halifax bus sailing off towards Turf moor.
So that meant a half hour wait....not exactly what I had hoped for.

At last the bus came in. We were off....on a very pleasant country run.
Over the hills and through the winding lanes of Overtown and Mereclough in Cliviger.
Then towards Portsmouth. The hills in this part of the country really feel like they close in on you.

When I was 11 years old and until I was about 15 I used to,travel this road every Friday after school. I stayed with an old Auntie each weekend, did her shopping and some of the house work too.....so I knew this road very well.....and never felt comfortable with the countryside around these parts. I still feel the same. The earth magic is somehow wrong. Maybe you are laughing at me now....thinking me fanciful and perhaps even a bit tapped.

We trundled on to Todmorden.....then Hebden Bridge. That place was 'bumping'.
It seemed that there was some kind of gathering being held up on Stoodley Pike. People were taking picnic baskets, rugs and the like up,there.

They would need them, it is a top coat colder up there even on the hottest summer day.
A brass band was getting all their instruments taken up there too.

The canal was thick with colourful barges. The banks were thronged with families and their four legged friends....just taking the spring sunshine.

I did toy with the idea of hopping off the bus here.
It would have provided a very rich seam of pictures for me.
My plans were to go to The Piece Hall in Halifax and take pictures there. It has been something I have wanted to do for a couple of years.

Anyway, the bus trundled on to Halifax.

I got off the bus at the bus station.....took a cursory look around.....just to get my bearings so that I could find my way back.
In all the time I have travelled the country, I have never yet got lost.
I consulted a large map of the town to determine which direction I should be headed.

It took me only a short while to locate The Piece Hall.....and what do you think?
It was shut!
It is going to stay shut until sometime in 2016.
Heck I could be shoving up the daisies by then.
Apparently the place is having 'an exciting makeover' .....damn, drat, blast.
I was soooo disappointed......so much so I had to console myself with a plate of fish and chips...the fish was good, but the chips were only so-so.

So I spent my time tripping about the town taking pics of other things of interest.

I had a fine time. Even considering the disappointment of not being able to complete my task....it was a good day. I enjoyed it.
It has given me a thirst for going back another day....but getting there a bit earlier.
I have put some pics on the thread 'today in pictures'.....so head on over there and have a look at those. I might just put some more on here too.

Good to hear that you are getting out and about again Jen.
It was a good day out once I had got over my disappointment about the Piece Hall......I had so looked forward to going there and taking pics.

Hebden Bridge looked very good(for photos) too...that's on my list...along with Hoghton Tower.

it is Margaret .. my sister and her hubby came up one day and dragged me out round bacup on easter Saturday a couple of years ago ... following the coconutters and then went to hebden bridge afterwards ...

at the end of may the east lancs railway will be doing their 40s weekend ...

After getting Google's help, I can see now why you want so much to see the Piece Hall, Margaret. It's fantastic! I'm sure the renovations will be worth waiting for.
I really enjoyed reading your blog - you describe your journey so well. Your photos are great! You excel at getting candid shots of folk around you, as well as architectural stuff. Thanks for this :)

Carolyn, you say the nicest things. I have to be careful not to let it go to my head.
I enjoy writing about my days out.......sometimes when I can't get out(for whatever reason) a visit to my blog is just the ticket. It makes me feel like I went back.

And most of my travels are Free. I use my bus pass.

I knew that was halifax even before i read the blog , the buskers gave it away i have seen them myself . I go to halifax quite a lot with work, it has some lovely buildings and i cant see the piece hall without thinking of brassed off. Its not bad to say its in yorkshire (notice no capitals for halifax or yorkshire ) i cant help my lancastrian feelings:D .Anyway yet again a good one Margaret:)

Well, being a half and half(Ma hails from Sheffield).....I have to say that there are bits of Yorkshire that I like.....and in truth I liked Halifax. I just wish I had gone a bit earlier in the day.
Glad you enjoyed reading about my wanderings.
